The 201-room Royal Hideaway Playacar is an adults-only all-inclusive resort offering a luxury beachfront experience in Playa del Carmen. Extensive features consist of six swimming pools, a full-service spa with great treatments, lovely beachfront with sunbeds, and a good array of activities and entertainment. Unfortunately, guests have complained of loungers at the main pool getting snagged early. Six restaurants serve well-regarded food, including Mexican, Italian, and Asian cuisines, but there’s no buffet and all eateries require reservations. Premium-branded liquor and non-alcoholic beverages are served at the three bars. Colonial-style rooms range from attractive standard units with jetted tubs, separate showers, and furnished terraces to two-level Casitas with living spaces and kitchens. The beautiful grounds, overall sophisticated vibe, adults-only policy, and beautiful coastal location a short drive from shopping on Playa’s Fifth Avenue make it one of the most attractive options for couples in Playacar. Families, meanwhile, should consider the kid-friendly Grand Velas Riviera Maya, an all-inclusive luxury resort.

True to its name, the upper-middle-range Pueblo Bonito Rose is a massive pink resort situated on the most swimmable beach in Cabo, Playa el Medano. Arranged in a u-shape around the massive freeform pool, all 260 suites are spacious and come with kitchenettes and balconies. With a private section of the public beach, several dining options, optional all-inclusive rates, pool activities, and a shuttle between sister resorts, the hotel is an ideal pick for families. There are a few wellness options including an up-to-date fitness center and tranquil spa with a beauty salon. The biggest complaint here is pesky time-share pitches. For those looking for a little more quiet, check out the sister resort Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, a more tranquil option on a quieter stretch of beach.

The atmosphere at the Grand Mayan is peaceful (aside from pushy timeshare sellers): The massive pool looks out onto a pristine beach, the Brio Spa has soothing decor, and the chic and spacious rooms feature private balconies and bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs and walk-in showers. In the quiet area of San Jose del Cabo (as opposed to party-hearty Cabo San Lucas), the hotel is within walking distance of town and caters toward couples with its sexy open bathrooms and upscale restaurants (although there are some mixed reviews on the food). Drawbacks, however, are fairly significant -- the pool temperature is often chilly, and the beach is riddled with jellyfish.

Privilege Aluxes is an upscale, optional all-inclusive resort across the road from Playa Norte. The 124 rooms are contempora, featuring minibars, bathrobes, free small bottles of liquor, and big flat-screen TVs. Some rooms have balconies with whirlpools or private pools, kitchenettes, and/or ocean views. A flexible all-inclusive plan, four on-site restaurants -- including a reservation-required specialty spot -- a small but attractive pool with swim-up bar, and big beach club with free loungers are favorites with guests, however, the food receives mixed reviews and some rooms overlook a cemetery. Guests also have access to a spa with thermal circuit and small gym with several machines. This is an adult-oriented hotel, so families should consider the livelier, all-inclusive Mia Reef Isla Mujeres down the road.

The 1,031-room Caribe & Beach is a mid-range all-inclusive resort located right on a white-sand beach just south of Playa del Carmen. It is the least luxurious of the three properties in the Barcelo complex, but offers two huge pools, six restaurants, and a long list of activities for all ages. The hotel caters mostly to families -- with great kid-friendly features such as a kids’ and teens' clubs and rooms that can accommodate up to five guests -- but it is also popular with couples and groups.

This adults-only, luxury all-inclusive property with 507 rooms appeals to both 20- and 30-something couples. A particular draw of the Hilton Playa del Carmen, an All-Inclusive Adult Only Resort is its proximity to the nightlife of downtown Playa del Carmen, especially bustling Fifth Avenue, which the party-oriented appreciate. But the gorgeous stretch of beach and the sophisticated rooms with two-person jetted tubs means romantic-minded couples will be pleased here as well. The range of features is, unsurprisingly, extensive, including seven restaurants and five bars, an Olympic-sized pool, a wedding center, and a spa. The adults-only Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun has a much more secluded beach, but it's farther from downtown.

Club Regina is a lively, colorful 222-room resort in Marina Vallarta managed by Raintree Vacation Club, a time-share operator. While it’s less than a 10-minute drive from the airport, the trade-off is that it’s farther away from the lovely downtown. The resort’s standout feature is the expansive pool, which includes a swim-up bar, a large hot tub, and plenty of seating. Another highlight: Many rooms include a jetted hot tub on a private balcony that overlooks the ocean. The rest of the resort is pretty standard fare for an upper-middle-range property – with the exception of the small, rocky beach, which is a bit disappointing. For a comparable nearby property with an all-inclusive option, consider Vamar Vallarta.

The upper-middle-range Nomade Tulum is a beachfront boutique with a spiritual focus in Tulum's hotel zone. This area of Tulum is widely known for its health and wellness side, and the Nomade takes it to the next level by offering a holistic wellness program. The 44 well-styled and spacious rooms -- all with 24-hour electricity, AC, and rainfall showers -- free breakfast buffet, huge beach area, and free wellness activities like yoga, sound healing, meditation, and weekly temazcal ceremonies make this one of the best bang-for-your-buck wellness options. Two restaurants serve local and seasonal menus with raw and vegan options, while two bars pour coffee and booze until late. Freebies include unreliable Wi-Fi, bikes, and valet parking. For a similarly stylish vibe and no-kids policy, check out Be Tulum next door, though the rates can be nearly double.

Hotel Barcelo Maya Beach is one of five resorts that make up the Barcelo Maya Grand Resort complex. While water sport activities, a gym, and spa are common all-inclusive features, a haunted house, mall, mini-golf, and Dolphinarium are not -- and that’s what sets this huge three-and-a-half-pearl hotel apart. The beach is basically private for guests and rarely feels overcrowded. The pools are fun and offer separate sections for adults and kids. Modern suites are renovated and all 630 rooms feature free minibars. Downsides include mediocre food, long wait times at check-in, a fee for Wi-Fi, and dated standard rooms, but families and couples are generally happy. For a resort that takes advantage of Playa del Carmen’s city life, check out Playacar Palace, a smaller but more modern resort that offers intimate service.

Opened in 2013, NIZUC Resort and Spa is a stylish and luxurious 274-suite and villa property situated on 29 acres of peaceful nature preserve in Punta Nizuc. Its mangroves and rocky white-sand beaches help make it an ideal spot for couples and friends to relax and soak in Cancun's sometimes elusive tranquility. Features include a good selection of bars and restaurants, three pools, water sports, and a kids club -- in addition to what is possibly the most impressive spa in town. All rooms have exceptional decor; private villas have dipping pools, large terraces, and outdoor showers. The only other hotel along the Punta Nizuc coastline is the cheaper (and much older) all-inclusive Club Med; travelers will be hard-pressed to find another option in Cancun that matches Nizuc's secluded feel.
